Chapter 9
When the Jeep pulled up in front of Marthaâs modest home, just down the block from the Chocolaterie, Adam was already watching out the window.
As Adam waved and bounded away from the window, Miros couldnât help but smile at the fleeting thought that if the boy had a tail, it would have been wagging.
Lia hurried up the walk to meet her son. She stood chatting on the porch with Martha for a few minutes, and Miros used the time to survey the picturesque neighborhood in the moonlight. The wind was up this evening and carried the fresh scent of rain over the Atlantic.
He caught the barest glimpse of movement in the shadow of a maple and nodded his thanks to Balke for keeping such a careful watch over Adam. Balke melted back into the blackness and disappeared from sight.
Lia was rubbing her neck absently where his fresh mating mark lingered as she came down the walk holding hands with her chattering son.
Miros felt a flash of unfamiliar pride in the two. He knew it must have been a struggle for Lia, but they had done well essentially on their own. It would be his privilege now to help make their lives a little easier.
Watching Lia, Miros wondered again why Stefan had left his lovely human wife unmated. Perhaps the manâs instincts were not fully developed, but the need to mark was such an overwhelming urge, Miros couldnât imagine Stefan having the willpower necessary to resist. Then again, Miros could barely comprehend any of the

things Stefan had done, and he knew there must be so much more that he hadnât heard yet.
âWe played a new game on the flat screen, and I flew a fast yellow airplane. I got the high score over Owen. The controllers are too slow for me, but it was still awesome!â Lia smiled down at her son, and Miros thought he had never seen such a beautiful sight.
Adam saw Miros, then, and broke away from his mother to run straight to him. Miros went down on one knee, and the boy gave him a quick hug before returning to his astonished mother.
Lia frowned. âDo you two know each other?â Adam shook his shaggy head.
âJust today, Mommy. But I know I like him by his scent,â Adam said. âHe likes me, too, I can tell. Not like Stefan.â Liaâs gaze flew to Mirosâs, and the anguish in those beautiful eyes sent a stab of pain through his heart.
âIt will be much easier than you think, Lia,â Miros said quietly.
âIt is all new to you, but Adam accepts it already. He lives with it. It is all very natural to him.â
Liaâs shoulders jerked in a tight shrug, and she swallowed audibly.
It was clear that she was fighting tears.
Miros was shocked at how much it hurt him to know that his mate was crying. His powerful, ancient instinct insisted that if his mate was sad it meant that he was failing her in some important way, but he was at a loss.
